Click-And-Point Robotics

This New York Times story details research into dexterous robots - ones that purportedly can do your bidding with a point-and-click from a laser beam.

How delicious it would be to have a robot to aid our Gimpy bodies: “Robot: Prepare my bath and bring me a glass of wine - and feed the dog while you’re at it.”

Never Underestimate The Gimpy!

Police in Palo Alto, California, were looking for a bank robber who favored a slow-speed getaway vehicle - an electric wheelchair.

Police said a man in his 60s with gray hair and a beard used a black handgun to rob the Wachovia Bank branch at the Stanford Shopping Center.

After the stickup, he left in his wheelchair and was last seen motoring down a nearby street toward El Camino Real, a major thoroughfare. Witnesses say the man’s legs were wrapped in bandages and his right leg was sticking straight out while he zoomed away.

The Associated Press reported police were looking for a white Ford van that the suspect may have been hoisted into after the robbery.

Modern Love

The New York Times “Modern Love” column - in our opinion - is always worth reading, but this one especially so.

Kayla Rachlin Small, a recent Columbia University graduate who has cystic fibrosis, writes about lonliness and her attraction to a young man with cystic fibrosis. People with cystic fibrosis carry certain bacteria that are harmless to the general population but catastrophic if transmitted to another cystic fibrosis patient.

But when Kayla met Thomas, their attraction was strong: “I ache for my vision of quarantine: an apartment with others like me,” she wrote, explaining she had “mythologized this community” of like-minded and like-bodied people.
